Phishing

Spear Phishing targets the weakest link in most organizations: The user.

What are the risks of Spear phishing?

Spear phishing is attempted fraud via email spoofing that targets a specific organization with the aim of gaining unauthorized access to confidential information. If a cyber criminal is successful, he receives the user data for some systems and people, which then also gives them access to valuable data such as IBN numbers, bank details, data about possible healthcare, etc. This is a very lucrative business on the black market. This damages the reputation of an organization. Data from employees being exposed does not help the image, think of the Sony story in 2014.

How can you protect yourself against Spear Phishing?

  • Inbound email sandboxing, ensure that a solution is implemented to check an emailed link for security when an end user clicks on it through content filtering or Advanced Malware Inspection such as Palo Alto Networks WildFire.
  • Use a Next Generation Firewall technology with real-time analysis and inspection of internet traffic
  • Use a Web Security Gateway so that malicious URLs do not even reach the business mailboxes of end users.
  • Improving employee behavior through, for example, internal test programs (awareness of click behavior of end users)
